Tour introduction

01

Zagreb’s main square – Ban Jelačić Square (named after our 19th century viceroy) – is the usual starting point for our comprehensive walking tour. This capital city developed after the merging of two historic settlements – Kaptol and Gradec, and we’ll show you both sides. In Kaptol, you will learn about the biggest Cathedral in Croatia and Croatian Catholic Church.

02

Later in Gradec, you will discover the picturesque Dolac – a farmer’s market full of tastes, smells and vivid colours. Next up is Ilica street, one of the oldest and longest city streets and the main shopping area in Lower Town. Just a few steps away is one of the major attractions in Zagreb - the Funicular, the shortest link between Lower Town and Upper Town.

03

Within a couple of minutes, we will find ourselves right by the Lotrščak Tower, the only preserved fortress from the 13th century left. The tour leads us through the square of St. Catherine and St. Cyril and Methodius to the church of St. Mark, recognisable by its unique and very colourful roof. The square here is the centre of Croatia's political life – the buildings around house the Croatian Parliament, the Government Building, the Town Hall and the Constitutional Court.

04

From St. Mark’s square we head down towards the Stone Gate, the last preserved city gate and today a small chapel to the Virgin Mary of Stone Gate. Our tour guides us further down Radićeva Street to the Bloody Bridge, the ancient border between the two hills of the city. History reveals that this was the place where disagreements between the inhabitants of secular Gradec and Catholic Kaptol were resolved. Today this site is now a beautiful pedestrian street - Tkalčićeva street – and the hub of social life of the city. We go on to the famous city park - Zrinjevac.

05

As a protected green space in this bustling city, Zrinjevac is an oasis for nature lovers and a key part of social life here. Continuing on, we pass by the Central Station and the Esplanade Hotel, rich with history and one of the most prestigious city hotels today. The Botanical gardens are next - the city's lungs and an escape from the city crowds. The Croatian National Theatre is nearby and is the beautiful home for many Croatian artists and performers. Here we begin our road trip, travelling over to the southern shore of the river Sava to explore Novi Zagreb, New Zagreb. This area is full of architectural interests, ranging from socialist styles to more modern designs and tells us about the recent Croatian history. This part of the city is dominated by skyscrapers and residential buildings, as well as business centres.

06

Our journey continues to Mirogoj, one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe and far more than just a final resting place. It is like an open-air art gallery; blue domed cloisters, intricate tombstones and tiled arcades – this is a masterpiece of architecture designed by Hermann Bolle. To top off your experience in Zagreb, you have option to treat yourself to a wine tasting at a famous vineyard and to enjoy gourmet specialties from the heart of Prigorje. The vineyard offers beautiful meals prepared with fresh, local produce - sit down and enjoy a delicious dinner pair with top class wines.

Testimonials & reviews

Tripadvisor review Oct 2018.

We just got back from the trip to the Plitvice Lakes, a tour offered by Permansio Tours. It includes a stop at Rastoke, full lunch and tickets to the park, so you can skip standing in line to buy, you get the pre-purchased tickets and go in. There are a few company’s that offer the same trip or very similar, but here’s why I think Permansio is the best.

As mentioned, the owner of the company was our driver today, and he is a great guide! Very knowledgeable and friendly. We actually feel like we made a new friend here today. If you are into learning more of the culture and history of the area, and going to the Plitvice National Park, we highly recommend this company.

They pick up and drop off at your hotel. The relationship with this company and the restaurant is very good, and we felt like we were treated like family.

The customers who book with Permansio are their top priority.

We had a great time and we would use this company for any and all tours when we come back to Zagreb and surrounding area.
