Caves and rock formations
have long captivated the human imagination, evoking a mix of intrigue,
fascination, and even fear. In the southwest of Slovenia, two
magnificent treasures await discovery: Predjama Castle and Postojna
Cave. Both sites showcase the remarkable wonders of nature in their own
unique ways. Nestled in the heart of the Karst region, renowned for its
intricate underground landscapes shaped by soluble rocks and flowing
water, these attractions have been carefully preserved to ensure future
generations can marvel at their splendor.
Perched halfway inside a towering 123-meter rock, Predjama Castle dates back to the 12th century. This awe-inspiring fortress stands as a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of medieval builders. Built into the sheer cliff face, the castle offers a captivating glimpse into the past, providing insights into the social and economic activities of the time. Although the original castle succumbed to an earthquake, it was meticulously reconstructed in the Renaissance style during the 16th century. The pit beneath the castle also holds its own historical significance, with evidence of human habitation predating the birth of Christ.
Legends surrounding the castle's curse persist, including the infamous tale of its most renowned inhabitant, Erazmo Predjamski. Unfortunately, Erazmo met a tragic end while sitting on the toilet in the castle, as he was betrayed during his feud with Emperor Fridrik III. The castle's ingenious architecture, nestled within a massive rock formation and guarded by a defensive canal, made it virtually impregnable. The castle's rocky back wall, while providing freshwater, also contributed to its chilling interior. Adding to its mystique, a vast network of karstic tunnels lies beneath the castle, allowing Erazmo and his servants to move about undetected. Alas, his fate was sealed when a servant, lured by promises of reward, betrayed him. To this day, some claim to hear Erazmo's spirit haunting the castle corridors, seeking vengeance for his betrayal and demise.
Postojna Cave, a masterpiece crafted by nature over millions of years, stands as a testament to geological wonders. This breathtaking subterranean marvel elicits admiration and respect from all who visit. Guided group tours, available in multiple languages, offer visitors a 90-minute exploration of the cave's captivating beauty. Formed by the persistent flow of the Pivka River through the Karst landscape, the cave comprises vast chambers and halls, maintaining a pleasant temperature of 10°C year-round. Deep within this underground realm, accessible by an electric train, visitors may even catch a glimpse of a peculiar creature known as the "baby dragon". This curious amphibian-like salamander has found its home within the cave's depths. Known as the Olm or Proteus anguinus, these pale, snake-like creatures with no eyes possess extraordinary adaptations to their subterranean habitat. They are highly sensitive to light through their skin, equipped with thousands of light receptors. Olms can live up to 100 years and can survive for 12 years without food.
The mystery of their reproduction still eludes scientists, but a female Olm in the Postojna Cave was documented to have laid 21 eggs, hatching the next generation of these unique creatures. The discovery of the Postojna Cave in 1818 was serendipitous when Luka Čeč, an assistant "lamplighter," accidentally fell into a deep pit while making preparations for Emperor Franjo I's visit. His unexpected plunge opened up an entirely new underground world. Although Luka Čeč did not receive recognition during his lifetime, he continued to explore this captivating Karst landscape and became the initiator of the first speleological research project in the area. In 1872, the introduction of a railway inside the cave made it more accessible to growing numbers of explorers, sparing them the long walk. This pioneering train, consisting of two carriages, each accommodating four visitors and a cave guide, allowed for a unique underground journey. In 1899, the world's first cave post office was established in the Postojna Cave. Visitors could purchase postcards upon arrival and send them from within this extraordinary natural spectacle. In 1904, during the Pentecost festival, a record-breaking 13,800 postcards were sold. These postcards, precursors to today's social media, offer a glimpse into the historical significance and popularity of the cave as a tourist destination.
No visit to Slovenia is complete without immersing oneself in the captivating capital city of Ljubljana. With a rich history tracing back to Roman times, when the settlement of Emona was founded, the area's strategic location ensured its continuous habitation. The name "Ljubljana" has sparked lively debates among experts, some associating it with the Slovenian word "ljubljena," meaning "beloved," while others connect it to a Roman term for a flooded river or the name of a Slavic deity. Visitors to Ljubljana are enamored by its charm and vibrant culture, often returning to bask in its lively atmosphere time and time again. A unique national holiday dedicated to cultural achievements sheds light on the Slovenian spirit. Slovenia stands as the only country that celebrates a day solely dedicated to a significant cultural figure, poet France Prešern. The central square, dedicated to Prešern, and his poem "Zdravljica," which serves as Slovenia's national anthem, are testaments to his enduring legacy.
The city boasts seven bridges that span the Ljubljanica River, adding to its enchanting allure. The Tromostovje Bridge, comprising three smaller bridges, has become an iconic symbol of the city. The Mesar's Bridge, dedicated to couples, allows for the symbolic act of attaching padlocks and tossing the keys into the water as a testament to eternal love. The Šuštar Bridge, with its twelve magnificent stone pillars, stands as one of Ljubljana's oldest bridges. However, it is the legendary Dragon Bridge, guarded by statues of mighty dragons, that truly captures the imagination. According to local folklore, this bridge commemorates the Greek hero Jason and the Argonauts' legendary quest for gold. On their journey, they encountered the fearsome Kolchis King, from whom Jason stole both gold and the beautiful princess Medea. Fleeing through the Danube and Sava regions, the adventurers arrived in Ljubljana, where they faced the formidable Ljubljana Dragon. Undeterred, Jason triumphed over the dragon and celebrated his victory in the city. The dragon remains a powerful symbol of courage and strength, deeply intertwined with the history of Ljubljana.
A
visit to Ljubljana would not be complete without ascending the hill to
Ljubljana Castle, locally known as "Ljubljanski grad". This iconic
landmark houses a museum and a chapel dedicated to St. George, the
patron saint of Ljubljana. From the castle, visitors can savor an
unforgettable 360° panoramic view of the city and the surrounding
mountains. Additionally, don't miss the renowned Tivoli Town Park, known
for its natural beauty, and take the time to admire the stunning
architectural gems scattered throughout the city. Strolling through the
streets, one can appreciate the elegance of the Town Hall and the Church
of St. Nicholas.
Ljubljana, a modern and vibrant city, stands proudly among famous European cities.

Tripadvisor review Oct 2018.
We just got back from the trip to the Plitvice Lakes, a tour offered by Permansio Tours. It includes a stop at Rastoke, full lunch and tickets to the park, so you can skip standing in line to buy, you get the pre-purchased tickets and go in. There are a few company’s that offer the same trip or very similar, but here’s why I think Permansio is the best.
As mentioned, the owner of the company was our driver today, and he is a great guide! Very knowledgeable and friendly. We actually feel like we made a new friend here today. If you are into learning more of the culture and history of the area, and going to the Plitvice National Park, we highly recommend this company.
They pick up and drop off at your hotel. The relationship with this company and the restaurant is very good, and we felt like we were treated like family.
The customers who book with Permansio are their top priority.
We had a great time and we would use this company for any and all tours when we come back to Zagreb and surrounding area.
